CHOP calculates capital requirements for broker dealers and market makers in accordance with Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules.  The SEC rules detail a method of calculating capital requirements of a security account based on an estimate of the market risk of the account. The account can contain long and short positions in stock, options, futures, indexes, index baskets, and other securities. The risk of an account is measured as its maximum expected loss as the prices of the securities in the account move through a range of up and down steps. The maximum expected loss is a weighted net of the profits and losses on the securities in the account.

Here is the data which you need:

• Beginning balance and date
• Ending balance and date
• Amount and dates of any account deposits of withdrawals.

You do not need:

• Trades in the account
• Dividends
• Interest
• Etc

All those items are taken into account by virture of their effect on the ending balance in the account.

You'll need a copy of Mircosoft Excel 2000 or equivalent to run the ReturnOnInvestmentCalculator.xls Spreadsheet. When you launch the spreadsheet, you see a dilaog box which asks you if you want to "Enable Macros?" You will have to enable macros in order for the spreadsheet to calculate your Return On Investment (ROI).

If you click the link below, and your system recognizes it as an Excel spreadsheet, it will start Excel and execute it. You can save it on your hard drive, by using your browser's "File/SaveAs" command. Alternatively, you can right-click the link below, and most browsers will display a menu which includes a "Save File" choice. Save ReturnOnInvestmentCalculator.xls from the menu on your hard drive, and then you can execute it from your hard drive anytime.

The Julian Date Library v1.05 includes full C source code, and provides a library of date routines which are useful in financial and other types of programs. The functions allow you to translate dates between: Gregorian, string, and Julian day numbers. This facilitates date calculations. The included README file has a fairly complete description of Julian dates and leap years. You can try it for free, but you must pay the license fee if you decide to use it. You'll need a copy of PKZIP, WINZIP or equivalent to unzip Julian.zip
